The concert, “From Bach to the Beatles,” will include programming for choir from the incomparable sacred music of J. S. Bach to choral composers including Gabriel Fauré and John Rutter, and on to the Beatles.

The performance will be under the direction of Dr. Linda Shea, Director of Instrumental Music of the Summit High School music department, and will feature keyboardist Leonard Rhodes on organ, piano and harpsichord.

Interested singers may attend one or both music introduction sessions, where singers will gather for half-hour sessions with Len and Linda to sing through some of the music as vocal sections. A dazzling performer, 2001 Van Cliburn Competition winner Olga Kern will present a solo recital of virtuoso music for piano. Kern, noted for her mesmerizing presence as well as her command of the keyboard, will pair music by Clara and Robert Schumann, including Carnaval, Op. 9 with monumental works from her homeland of Russia—Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Sonata, Piano Sonata No. 9 by Alexander Scriabin and Balakirev’s virtuoso showpiece, Islamey (Oriental Fantasy).

“The audience jumped to its feet in well-deserved ovations, and the monumentally talented artist responded with encores that stretched beyond this review’s deadline. From feather-light musical whispers to explosive instrumental fireworks, Kern’s rare gift is that of a serious and true musician, whose golden touch is never harsh and always controlled.”

BMF Winter Series Concert: “Quartet Americana”

January 7, 2011
7:30 pm

BMF Winter Series Concert: “Quartet Americana”
Location: Lord of the Mountains Lutheran Church, Dillon (map)
Cost: $25

Music for String Quartet featuring returning summer Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra artists Loren Silvertrust, Jeremy Blanden, Karl Pedersen and Peter Thomas.

This American themed program features the music of American composers Philip Glass and George Gershwin, topped off with Dvořák’s famous ‘American’ string quartet.

Arranger Stanley Silverman takes five classic Gershwin songs and translates the lyrical poetry of Ira Gershwin’s verse writing genius into elegant writing for string quartet.

Philip Glass’s fourth string quartet was composed in memory of visual artist Brian Buczak.

Referred to as the crowning masterpiece of Dvořák’s years in the United States, his op. 96 quartet was written in the summer of 1893 in Spillville Iowa. There is an energetic spirit throughout. In the Lento, a beautiful, longing melody expresses both the influence of African American spirituals and Dvořák’s own homesickness for his native Czechoslovakia.

Five Songs for String Quartet                                  George Gershwin (arr. Stanley Silverman)

String Quartet No. 4 “Buczak”                                         Philip Glass

String Quartet Op. 96 in F Major “The American”     Antonín Dvořák
