FLUTES
Helen Blackburn, Principal Flute
Helen Blackburn is principal flutist with the Dallas Opera Orchestra and a member of “Voices of Change.” Ms. Blackburn has been a member and a featured soloist with the Aspen Music Festival, the South Bohemia Music Festival, the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, the Brevard (NC) Music Center, and the Chicago Civic Orchestra. Ms. Blackburn is adjunct professor of flute at Texas Christian University and the University of North Texas and received her bachelor of music degree (summa cum laude) from West Texas State University and her master of music degree from Northwestern University. Helen is a certified Bikram Yoga instructor is an avid dog lover and enjoys hiking and most things outdoors.
Lisa Jelle
Associate Professor of Flute at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, Lisa returns for her 20th season. Previously a member of Honolulu, Fort Wayne, and Austin Symphonies, she is Principal Flute of the Ashland Symphony and also appears with ProMusica Chamber Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony. Dr. Jelle’s recording of Paul Osterfield’s Jagged Edges for piccolo and piano was released last year. Lisa is happy to be collaborating with her husband, jazz pianist Mark Flugge, again this summer. Degrees held are from the University of Northern Colorado, The University of Texas at Austin, and Rice University.
OBOES
Sandra Stimson, Principal Oboe
Sandra is Principal oboe of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra in Indiana. Previous orchestral engagements include Principal oboe of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Principal oboe of the Billings Symphony Orchestra, and Acting Associate Principal Oboe of the Omaha Symphony Orchestra. Originally from New York, she earned her Bachelors degree from Ithaca College and a Masters degree from Yale University. Sandra's principal teachers include Richard Killmer, Ronald Roseman and Mark Hill. This is her eighth season with BMF.
Johanna Cox
Johanna Cox is the Assistant Professor of Oboe at the University of Oklahoma and member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic. In October of 2005, she made her Carnegie Hall solo debut. A graduate of Northwestern University and the Eastman School of Music, Ms. Cox was chosen for Eastman’s Freiburg Exchange Program, bringing her to Germany to study with soloist Heinz Holliger at the Freiburg Musikhochschule. In 1997, Johanna and twin sister, Lenora, performed the Bach Double Concerto with the National Repertory Orchestra. This is her fifth summer with the BMF Orchestra.
CLARINETS
Kenneth Krause, Principal Clarinet
Kenneth is a member of the Dallas Opera Orchestra. He is Principal of the Richardson Symphony Orchestra and performs frequently with the Dallas and Fort Worth Symphony Orchestras. He formerly served as Principal of the Dallas Wind Symphony. He has recorded with Anshel Brusilow as a member of the Richardson Symphony, and with Howard Dunn and Frederick Fennel as a member of the Dallas Wind Symphony. Krause holds degrees from Northwestern University and North Texas State University. He returns for his tenth season at Breckenridge.
John Klinghammer
John Klinghammer has been 2nd Clarinetist with the Omaha Symphony since 2001. He has previously been a member of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the National Repertory Orchestra. He is an active chamber musician whose playing has been called “charismatic” by the Omaha World Herald. John has a B.A from the University of Oregon, an M.M from the University of Southern California, and will receive his D.M.A from USC in the fall of 2006. His teachers include Cindi Bartels, Dr. Wayne Bennett, Michael Anderson, Mitchell Lurie, David Howard, Michele Zukovsky, and the incomparable Yehuda Gilad.
BASSOONS
Gary Moody-Principal Bassoon
Gary is Professor of Double Reeds and Theory at Colorado State University. Dr. Moody holds degrees from the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Colorado. He was formerly a member of the Orchestra of the Nico Milan Opera House in Cape Town, South Africa. A multi-instrumentalist, he performs regularly on the oboe, English horn, bassoon, and contrabassoon. This is his twenty-seventh season with the BMF.
Roberto Iriarte
Roberto Iriarte, bassoon, is currently the Director of Orchestras at the Hudson City Schools in Hudson, Ohio. His orchestras have earned superior ratings and 1st place at State, National and International Festivals and competitions. In addition, Mr. Iriarte freelances with the Akron and Canton Symphonies, and Playhouse Square Orchestras in Cleveland for ballets, Broadway Shows and special events. Also a saxophonist, he loves all styles of music from classical to jazz. He is married to Katherine, a mezzo-soprano, and Colorado fanatic. They have a two-year old daughter, Mirabella.
HORNS
Darcy Hamlin, Principal Horn
Darcy Hamlin has held the 3rd Horn position with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra since 2003 and is the founder of the Milwaukee Brass Quintet. Ms. Hamlin was formerly Principal Horn with both the Akron and Canton Symphonies as well as Associate Principal Horn with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. She toured Europe with the Cleveland Orchestra as an extra player in 2002, and can be heard on several recordings as Principal Horn with the Cleveland Chamber Symphony and as Assistant Principal Horn with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops Orchestras, with whom she toured Taiwan and Japan.
Michael Morrow
Michael is Professor of Horn at Texas A&M University-Commerce and a member of the Dallas Opera Orchestra. He has appeared on six CD’s with the Dallas Wind Symphony and Frederick Fennel. His first solo recording, “Contest Solos for Horn” was released by Summit Records. Michael returns to BMF for his nineteenth season.
Jill Rodriquez
Jill Smith Rodríguez, returning for her thirteenth season with the BMF, is currently Assistant Principal horn with the Austin Lyric Opera Orchestra and Adjunct Instructor of Music at Texas Lutheran University. Other performance credits include the Dallas Opera, Austin Symphony, San Antonio Symphony and Ft. Worth Symphony orchestras as well as the Victoria Bach Festival. Jill is recorded on the film score for Spy Kids2: The Island of Lost Dreams. Ms. Rodríguez is a graduate of the University of North Texas and DePauw University and is an alumna of Interlochen Center for the Arts and the North Carolina School for the Arts International Music Program. She resides in New Braunfels, TX with her husband, Raúl, and their two children, Benjamin and Marisa.
Erin Cooper-Gay
Erin Cooper-Gay currently lives in Toronto, Canada where she combines a career as a horn player, a vocalist and an educator. A graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, she currently performs as utility horn with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and as principal of the Canton Symphony Orchestra. Erin served as principal horn of the Akron Symphony for 3 years, was a member of IRIS Chamber Orchestra and has performed with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Having participated in the National Repertory Orchestra in 2002 Erin is very happy to be back in Breckenridge this summer.
TRUMPETS
Timothy McFadden, Principal Trumpet
Timothy McFadden earned his Bachelor of Music from Duquesne University before doing graduate work at Bowling Green State University. Tim is currently principal trumpet with the Tulsa Symphony, and is also Orchestra Manager. In addition, Tim is also principal trumpet with the Tulsa Opera Orchestra. Tim was a featured soloist on all of the Tulsa Philharmonic’s series. For the past six years, Tim has served as principal trumpet for the Breckenridge Music Festival. Tim has been a featured soloist at BMF as well, performing the Haydn and Hummel Trumpet Concertos, and Bach’s Second Brandenburg Concerto.
Steve Haefner
A native of Wisconsin, Steven A. Haefner received his early training from Rachard Metzger, Principal Trumpet of the Milwaukee Symphony and was accepted at the Eastman School of music where he studied with Charles Geyer. Since 1988 Mr. Haefner has been 2nd trumpet with the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Trumpet with the LOOK OK Festival. From 2003-2005 he played with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Honolulu Symphony. Currently he is the 2nd trumpet with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra and The Breckenridge Music Festival.
William Day
William (Liam) Day, trumpet, is an active freelancer in New York City, and also has been Associate Principal Trumpet with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra since January 2008. Liam recently received a Master of Music degree in trumpet from The Juilliard School and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music, in 2005. Next year, Liam will begin a two-year fellowship called The Academy; A program developed by The Juilliard School, Carnegie Hall, and the Weill Music Institute to help cultivate exceptional talent in classical music.
TROMBONES
David Gier, Principal Trombone
David Gier teaches at The University of Iowa, and is an active soloist, chamber musician, and clinician. He is principal trombonist of the Quad City Symphony and the Cedar Rapids Opera Orchestra, and performs with the Iowa Brass Quintet. Gier began his career as a member of the Springfield (MA) Symphony and Orchestra New England, and previously taught at Baylor University. In early 2007, Albany Records released Gier's recording of chamber trios with trombone. Gier is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Yale University. He returns to Breckenridge for his seventeenth season.
Jemmie Robertson
Jemmie Robertson is an active musician in the Chicago area and teaches at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. He has performed with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Music of the Baroque, Chicago Chamber Musicians, and other area ensembles. In 2006, Jemmie completed a DM at Northwestern University. Jemmie also holds degrees from Yale University and the University of Northern Colorado. Previously, Jemmie was a member of the Virginia Symphony and the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band. Jemmie performed at the 2006 Alessi Seminar in Fossano, Italy. In 2007, Jemmie recorded his first solo CD.
Tom Joyce
Thomas Joyce (bass trombone) is in his thirteenth season as bass trombonist of the Charleston (SC) Symphony. Tom graduated the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, WA) summa cum laude in 1991 with degrees in Mathematics/Physics and Music and then pursued performance studies at the New England Conservatory and Boston University. In addition to his active teaching studio, Tom is a member of Burning River Brass, a professional twelve-piece brass ensemble based in Cleveland; he can be heard on that ensemble's five CD's. Tom spent the summer of 2005 as a member of the orchestra for Seattle Opera's production of Wagner's “Der Ring des Nibelungen," and is a founding member of the Charleston Brass.
TUBA
Raúl Rodriguez
Raúl is an Associate Professor of Music at Texas State University-San Marcos. His duties include applied music in the area of tuba and euphonium and he is an assistant director of the Bobcat Marching Band. His performance credits are quite diverse ranging from symphony and pop orchestras to brass quintet, solo recitals and jazz. He is an active member of the Tuba Tzars and SouthWest BrassWorks. When he is not performing or teaching, Mr. Rodríguez is involved in research as a reviewer of New Materials for the International Tuba-Euphonium Association Journal. Raúl has performed with the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra since 2001.
PIANO
Michael Linville
Michael Linville is the Director of Admissions and Coaching Associate with the New World Symphony in Miami Beach and an adjunct faculty member of the North Carolina School of the Arts. He is a pianist, percussionist, harpist, conductor and arranger and has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, New World Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, Pasadena Symphony and the Florida Philharmonic. He is also Artistic Coordinator of the New World Percussion Consort, an ensemble that performs contemporary chamber music featuring percussion. This is Mr. Linville’s fourteenth summer as a member of the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra.
Mark Flugge, Piano
Mark Flugge lives in Columbus, Ohio and teaches jazz piano at Capital University and at the Ohio State University. In July 2006 he appeared with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra as soloist in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. His latest recording, "In Love, In Blue" features solo jazz piano renditions of standards and original pieces. Mr. Flugge earned a BM in jazz composition from the Ohio State University, and MM in jazz performance from the Eastman School of Music. He is happy to join his wife, flutist Lisa Jelle, at the festival this year.
HARP
Megan Stout
Megan Stout is active as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral harpist in the IN area. She is principal harpist for the Evansville Philharmonic (IN), Owensboro Symphony (KY), and is a regular second harpist at the St Louis Symphony as well as a substitute for the principal position. Megan substitutes at the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and the Indianapolis Symphony. She will be performing for her third season with the Breckenridge Music Festival this summer and will appear as soloist with the orchestra in Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro. Other summer plans include performances in Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffman with the Opera Theatre of St Louis. In addition to her private teaching studio, Megan is on faculty at Indiana University Southeast. She received a BM and MM from Indiana University.
PRINCIPAL TIMPANI
John Curtis
John Curtis is Timpanist of the Canton Symphony Orchestra. An Ohio native, John has been a professional musician since the age of 14 when he performed the Benjamin Britten opera "Noahs Flood" with members of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. In addition to having performed as Timpanist with 11 different professional orchestras, he has performed in the orchestras of over 150 different productions of opera and musical theater. John has no hobbies but enjoys reading Shakespeare, cooking, and car repair. He is also the owner and caretaker of five cats.
PRINCIPAL PERCUSSION
Drew Lang
Percussionist Drew Lang performs regularly with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, the Dallas Wind Symphony, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and Casa Mañana Musicals. He has commissioned and premiered works for marimba in solo, chamber and concerto settings. Drew is in his fifth season as principal percussionist at the BMF Orchestra. He is also a timpanist with the Victoria Bach Festival and has served as principal percussionist for the Music in the Mountains Festival and the International Festival -Institute at Round Top. Drew is on the percussion faculty at Southern Methodist University.
VIOLINS I
Nathan Olson, Concertmaster
Nathan Olson is a recent graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Paul Kantor and William Preucil. Nathan is Concertmaster of the Canton Symphony Orchestra, as well as Principal Second Violin of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra and CityMusic Cleveland. He has performed as soloist with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, the Berkeley Symphony, the Oakland East Bay Symphony, and the Lexington Bach Festival Orchestra. With the Kashii String Quartet, he served on faculty at the Innsbrook Music Festival and won the silver medal at the 2005 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition.
Colleen McCullough
A native of Kansas, violinist Colleen McCullough currently plays with the Austin Symphony and holds a section position in the Waco Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing frequently, Colleen teaches privately and coaches chamber music to young artists at the Austin Chamber Music Center. Ms. McCullough received an undergraduate degree in violin performance from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA, where she completed her studies with Eric Rosenblith. She also received a Master of Music degree in performance from The University of Texas at Austin where she currently is pursuing a DMA in violin performance. Colleen McCullough is a student of Professor Brian Lewis.
Rachel Smoliar
Rachel Smoliar received her Bachelor’s of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with William Preucil and Stephen Rose. She is from Pittsburgh, PA, where she studied with Huei-Sheng Kao, assistant concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Rachel is a member of the 1st violin section of the Florida Orchestra and a substitute violinist for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of the Canton Symphony Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Orchestra. She has participated in the Grant Park Music Festival, Breckenridge Music Festival, Spoleto USA Festival, National Repertory Orchestra, and Tanglewood Festival Orchestra.
Jeffrey Zehngut
Jeffrey Zehngut is Associate Principal 2nd Violin of the San Diego Symphony. He studied with William Preucil and Paul Kantor at the Cleveland Institute of Music and with James Lyon of Penn State University. Jeff has performed at such venues as Kulas and Esber Recital Halls as well as the Harkness and Amassa Stone Chapels. Jeff spent two summers with the NRO and this is his sixth summer with the Breckenridge Music Festival.
Loren Silvertrust
Loren Silvertrust grew up outside of Chicago IL, attended Williams College for a BA in Comparative Literature, and Indiana University in Bloomington where she earned a Master of Music degree and Performer's Diploma. Awards include first place in the Jacobs School of Music Kuttner Quartet Competition, Indiana University Dean's Merit Scholarship, the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Scholarship, and the William W. Kleinhandler prize for excellence in music. Loren is currently a violinist with the New World Symphony in Miami FL.
Hannah Yim
Hannah Yim is in her third season with the BMF. Hannah has played with the New World Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, and Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, and recently joined the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. She was a frequent performer in the UC Berkeley Wednesday Noon Concert series from 1999 to 2001, has performed in the Lotus World Music Festival in Bloomington, IN, and was a member of the National Repertory Orchestra in 2005 and 2006. Hannah received her bachelors and masters degrees from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University under the guidance of Alexander Kerr and Henryk Kowalski.
VIOLINS II
Kathryn Hatmaker
Kate Hatmaker is currently a violinist with the San Diego Symphony, in addition to being the co-founder and Artistic Director of San Diego’s newest chamber music organization, Art of Élan. Ms. Hatmaker has played with a wide variety of American orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the New World Symphony, and the Canton Symphony Orchestra, and has been a featured soloist with the San Diego Symphony and the Breckenridge Music Festival orchestras. She completed her Masters of Music at Carnegie Mellon University and her undergraduate training at both the University of Iowa and the Sorbonne University in Paris, France, earning degrees in both Political Science and French.
Jeremy Blanden
Originally from Tampa, FL, Jeremy Blanden earned his B.M and Artist Diploma from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and his M.M. from Rice University. His major teachers include Kenneth Goldsmith, Conny Kiradjieff, Won-Bin Yim, Gabriel Pegis, and Andrew Galos. Jeremy has been the Visiting Lecturer of Violin & Chamber Music at Syracuse University and a member of the Syracuse Symphony. He has also performed with the Dayton Philharmonic and the Louisville Orchestra. Mr. Blanden is currently Concertmaster of the Lebanon Symphony (OH) while teaching Violin and Viola at Earlham College in Richmond, IN.
Megan Holland
A native of Albuquerque, NM, Megan Holland returned to her hometown in August of 2007 after six seasons as Principal Second Violinist of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. She also performs regularly with the New Mexico Symphony, the Santa Fe Symphony, Santa Fe New Music, and Chatter, a contemporary chamber music series. Megan is co-director of the strings program at Sandia Preparatory School with her husband James. She maintains a private studio and is an adjunct faculty member of the University of New Mexico. She holds degrees in violin performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the University of Southern California. This is her seventh season with the BMF.
Meghan Jones
Meghan Jones is currently the Assistant Principal Second violin in the Florida West Coast Symphony (Sarasota, FL). She has also been a member of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, and the New World Symphony. Meghan holds degrees in violin performance from Northwestern University and Boston University. This is her seventh year with the BMF.
Jeannette Jang
Jeannette Jang, 24, received her bachelor’s degree in music from the University of WI-Madison and will begin her masters at the University of Michigan in the fall. She has soloed with the Madison Symphony, Menomonee Falls Symphony, and twice with the UW-Symphony orchestras. Jeannette has participated in such summer festivals as Tanglewood, the International Festival-Institute, and she has served as concertmaster at Spoleto Festival USA and Colorado College. Jeannette was principal second violin of the Fresno Philharmonic (CA) for their ‘06-07 season, and she has also played with New World Symphony, Madison Symphony, Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Sarasota Opera.
Emily Cornelius
Emily Cornelius made her solo debut performing the Bruch Violin Concerto with the Richmond Symphony at age fifteen. Her appearances as recitalist and soloist since have garnered critical praise. The Washington Post lauded her as “a violinist beyond her years”, while the Richmond Times Dispatch hailed her performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto as “nothing short of brilliant”. Emily has served as concertmaster for the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra, and NEC’s Symphony and Chamber Orchestras.
She currently performs with the Canton Symphony. Emily holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory (B.M. ‘05) and New England Conservatory (M.M. ‘07).
VIOLAS
Jan-Marie Joyce
Jan-Marie Christy Joyce is in her eighth season as Principal Violist with the Charleston Symphony, where she has appeared frequently as soloist, most recently in Berlioz’ “Harold in Italy”. After earning a master's degree from Louisiana State University, she completed a professional studies certificate from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Jan-Marie is former Principal Violist of the Canton (OH) Symphony. In the summer of 2005, she was invited to perform in Seattle Opera's production of Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen". She is an adjunct faculty member at the College of Charleston, where she teaches viola and coaches chamber music. Ms. Joyce's first CD of chamber music (works for oboe and strings with members of her family) was released last spring. Jan-Marie also holds a bachelor's degree in Trumpet Performance.
Susan Pardue
Susan received a Bachelor’s degree from the North Carolina School for the Arts and her Master’s from the Juilliard School. As a Fulbright Scholar, she studied in Florence with Piero Farulli. Susan is a member of the Jacksonville Symphony and formerly played with the New World Symphony. This is her sixteenth season with the BMF.
Karl Pedersen
Karl Pedersen received a bachelor degree at the University of Iowa in violin, before switching to viola and receiving a master of music degree at the Peabody Institute under the tutelage of Victoria Chiang and Stephen Wyrczynski of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Karl has performed with many orchestras including the Virginia Symphony, Richmond Symphony, and Cedar Rapids Symphony and at the position of concertmaster with the Ottumwa Symphony and Oskaloosa Symphony. In 2005 and 2006 Karl was awarded the Peabody Development Grant. He currently resides in Miami Beach as a member of the New World Symphony.
Maria Boncaldo
Maria currently resides in Buffalo, NY where she substitutes regularly with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and teaches at the Orchard Park Suzuki School. Prior to moving to Buffalo, Maria was Principal of the Canton Symphony Orchestra. She has also performed with the New World Symphony and the Sarasota Opera. This is Maria’s fourth non-consecutive season with the Breckenridge Music Festival.
CELLOS
James Holland, Principal Cello
James Holland has been a member of the BMF orchestra since 1998. He served as Principal Cellist of the Charleston Symphony from 1996-2007. James earned degrees in cello performance from the University of Alabama and the Eastman School of Music. He was a featured soloist last year with the Albuquerque Philharmonic and the contemporary ensemble Chatter. In the past year he has performed with the Santa Fe Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony, the Albuquerque Chamber Soloists and the Bosque Chamber Music Society among others. James and his wife Megan have served as guest clinicians with several school strings programs in the Albuquerque area and are co-directors of the strings program at Sandia Preparatory School.
David Rosen
A Native of Los Angeles, California, cellist David Rosen received his Bachelor of Music from The Cleveland Institute of Music, his Master of Music and his Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Miami. He has participated in the music festivals of Aspen, Banff, Blossom, Breckenridge, Chautaqua and Heidelberg. David has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony, San Diego Symphony and the Los Angeles Opera. He was a member of the New Orleans Symphony from 1989-90 and has been a member of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra since 1991.
Rebecca Gilmore
Rebecca Gilmore, an orchestral and chamber musician, is currently assistant principal Cellist with The Virginia Symphony. Previously she was Principal Cellist of The Greensboro Symphony. Her cello career has taken her abroad to Canada, England, Austria, Germany, France and Italy. Within the US she has performed with numerous festivals, including the N.C. School of the Arts’ International Music Program. Chamber music being her passion, her latest joint venture is Ambrosia. The group has been featured on the prestigious Feldman Chamber Music Society Series and the Virginia Arts Festival in their hometown and toured North Carolina and parts of China. Ms. Gilmore holds degrees from Indiana and Rice Universities.
Peter Thomas
Originally from Stevens Point, Wisconsin, where he started to play the cello at age five, Peter Thomas was born into a family of musicians. He graduated from the ASTEC Suzuki Education Program in 1999 and received his bachelor of music degree at the University of Minnesota in 2003. In 2005 he earned a master of music degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music studying under Stephen Geber, Principal Cello (retired) of the Cleveland Orchestra. Mr. Thomas currently resides in Miami Beach and performs with the New World Symphony, furthering his education in orchestral performance.
BASSES
Alison Gaines, Principal Bass
Alison Gaines is currently principal bassist with the Rockford, IL Symphony and is a free-lance player, conductor, and teacher in the Chicago area. In March 2007 Ms. Gaines performed Proto's Carrmen Fantasy for double bass and orchestra and conducted a sold-out performance of the spring Pops concert with the Rockford Symphony. Prior to pursuing conducting, Ms. Gaines served as Principal Bassist of the Tulsa Philharmonic for 8 years and won a position with the New Jersey Symphony. She has appeared as soloist with orchestras such as the National Repertory Orchestra, the Tulsa Philharmonic under James Paul, and the Breckenridge Music Festival under Gerhardt Zimmerman.
Aaron White
Born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Aaron White began his musical studies in the Irving Independent School District in Irving, Texas. Aaron’s teachers include Patrick Moulds of the Dallas Opera, Thomas Lederer of the Dallas Symphony, and Jeffrey Turner of the Pittsburgh Symphony. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, and a Master of Music degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. Aaron has been a member of the Sarasota Opera Orchestra, the Canton Symphony, the New World Symphony, and the Louisville Orchestra. He currently is a member of the bass section of the Florida Orchestra in Tampa, FL.

Jacquelyn Culpepper, Soprano
Jacquelyn Culpepper’s lyric soprano voice has taken her across the United States, Europe, South America, the Caribbean and to countries in Asia including Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Brunei. Career highlights include 85 roles in opera and oratorio, and solo concert tours of American music throughout the world with American Voices (www.americanvoices.org). One of the highlights of her international work was a recital in Belgium to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Europe and end of World War II. She has sung in prestigious concert venues from Washington’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to Atlanta’s Symphony Hall, and in performances with the late, internationally-renowned conductor Robert Shaw. A featured guest artist at the Breckenridge Music Festival for 13 years, Jacquelyn has also sung with symphony orchestras, opera companies, and music festivals across the United States. Signature musical works for Ms. Culpepper include the Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915, and Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder. Ms. Culpepper has also performed on PBS; her national broadcasts include An Evening with Cole Porter and Salute to Masterpiece Theatre. Last summer she was invited to Turkey to teach an audition workshop at Hacettepe Ankara Devlet Konservatuvari. This summer, she presented a concert at the World Methodist Assembly at Lake Junaluska, North Carolina, and she will depart Colorado this summer for Taipei where she will perform, teach, and direct in the Taiwan International Summer Broadway Academy. Jacquelyn is currently Artist Associate of Voice at Davidson College in North Carolina. She lives at Lake Norman with husband Clem Huffman and daughters Jessica and Callie.
Christine Robertson, Soprano
Christine is excited to be singing with the BMF orchestra again after performing Bach’s Coffee Cantata and excerpts from Die Fledermaus in 2005. Breckenridge locals may remember her performances in recent holiday concerts, as well as her solo cabaret in 2006. Recent theatre/opera: Lucy in The Telephone (Opera at Augustana), Laurey in Oklahoma! (Barn Theatre, Michigan) and the starring role of Amalia in She Loves Me, which received a Joseph Jefferson nomination (Chicago’s “Tonys”) for Best Musical. Christine holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University and currently serves on the voice faculty at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, where she resides with her husband Jemmie and their son, James.
Drake Dantzler, Tenor
A native Texan, Drake Dantzler has performed as a principal artist with Austin Lyric Opera, Western Plains Opera, and The Ohio Light Opera. Mr. Dantzler was a Young Artist with the Des Moines Metro Opera, where he covered Lysander in Britten’s Midsummer Nights Dream, and Leo in Marc Blitzstein’s Regina. He was a member of the Sarasota Opera Apprentice program in 2008, and will return to Sarasota this fall for a production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Mr. Dantzler holds degrees from Vanderbilt University, Eastman School of Music, and a Doctorate from the University of Texas.
Daniel Boye, Bass-Baritone
Dan Boye, bass-baritone, has been widely featured as an operatic and musical theater performer, and as an oratorio soloist. He has performed various roles in over 20 Opera Carolina productions. In the 2007-08 Opera Carolina season, he sang the role of Dr. Falke in Die Fledermaus and Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors. The summer of 2008 will be his 11th season as Guest Artist with the Breckenridge Music Festival. He has performed with the Charlotte Symphony, Canton Symphony, Fayetteville Symphony, Asheville Symphony, the North Carolina Symphony, and the National Repertory Orchestra in a variety of capacities. A graduate of Emory and Henry College and the University of Georgia, he is currently a Professor of Physics at Davidson College where he teaches a wide range of physics courses including a course for non-science majors entitled “Musical Technology.” He has provided educational opportunities for thousands of public school students and adults of all ages, musical and scientific backgrounds through various programs and lectures. One such program is his “Science of Singing” lecture that takes a systematic look at the anatomy of the vocal instrument and the physics associated with its sound production. He also maintains an active research program in the development of new optical materials in the Laser Laboratory at Davidson College.

Panayis Lyras, Piano
Panayis Lyras is professor of piano and artist-in-residence at the Michigan State University College of Music. A native of Greece; Lyras attended the Athens Conservatory at age 6, and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Juilliard School. Winner of the Silver Medal in the 1981 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Lyras has been seen and heard by millions of television viewers on PBS and the Arts and Entertainment Network. He is also the first prize winner of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Utah, the University of Maryland International Piano Competition, the Three Rivers Piano Competition in Pittsburgh, and is a silver medalist in the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition in Israel. Since his 1980 recital debut in the prestigious Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena, California, Lyras has performed solo recitals in Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and many other cities across North America, including Boston, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, Denver, Houston, Portland, Sarasota, Seattle, Toronto, and Vancouver. His orchestral engagements have included performances with the Philadelphia and Minnesota Orchestras, the Buffalo and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras, the Boston Pops, and the San Francisco, Dallas, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Phoenix, Florida, Omaha, New Mexico, Nashville, New Jersey, Utah, North Carolina, Honolulu, and Pacific Symphony Orchestras. Internationally, Lyras has performed in England, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Mexico, South Africa, and Uruguay. Before joining the MSU faculty, Lyras served as artist-in-residence at Butler University.
