Free Family Concert
The Breckenridge Music Festival offers concerts for the entire family as part of its annual Summer Festival. These concerts feature our Festival Orchestra in a program designed especially with the young listener in mind. In 2017, the BMF produced Babar the Little Elephant, which illuminated the popular children’s tale of The Story of Babar, The Little Elephant, performed by six members of the Festival Orchestra, along with narration and live illustration.
Breckenridge Mountain Day Camp at Breck Rec Center
The BMF partners with the Breckenridge Recreation Department to maximize the Family Concert’s benefit to the community, pairing the Family Concert with a Music Week at the Rec Center’s summer day camp for children. For four days of the week leading up to the Friday Family Concert, ensembles of brass, strings, woodwinds and the harpist from the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra join campers to share music and information about their instruments, and other highlights that will capture the children’s interest and prepare them for the upcoming concert.
Summit School District Enrichment Week: Very Young Composers
The BMF partners with the Summit School District Enrichment Program, which offers enrichment courses for Summit County students ages Kindergarten through twelfth grade. Very Young Composers allows students of all backgrounds (no music experience necessary) to create their own musical piece from start to finish. With the help of teaching artists, musical games and rhythmic exercises, students learn about music theory and how to compose for different instruments. Then, they write their own story and set it to music in a step-by-step process. Students make every compositional decision and write every note with the teaching artists serving as mentors and scribes. The program culminates in a public performance of all the student compositions.
